Akasa Air’s entry likely to lower domestic Thiruvananthapuram sector rates

Express News Service KOCHI: Ticket rates for domestic services on the Thiruvananthapuram sector are likely to ease with new operator, Akasa Air, all set to initiate operations from the first quarter of next year. Unlike other airlines, Akasa Air has a flexible tariff structure that allows passengers to travel within the country on a shoestring budget. This could give it a competitive advantage over rivals such as IndiGo, SpiceJet and Vistara, forcing them to reconsider their ticket prices. Akasa Air, the country’s newest airline, launched services on the Bengaluru-Kochi sector last August. The airline currently operates from Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Kochi. According to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Ltd (TIAL) sources, Akasa Air’s next service will be from the state capital, on the Bengaluru-Thiruvananthapuram sector. The airline, founded by the late Rakesh Jhunjhunwala offers Bengaluru-Kochi tickets for Rs 1,747. Airport authorities have already received communication from the airline on starting services. They are expected to make an official announcement soon. Flights between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Bengaluru, and Bengaluru and Kochi, where Akasa Air operates, now cost 20-25 per cent less. Vistara, meanwhile, plans to begin its second daily service between Thiruvananthapuram and New Delhi in the first week of December. Vistara already operates one daily service in the sector. “More operators are planning services from Thiruvananthapuram. The ...

Why Akasa Air chose Mumbai and Bengaluru for its inaugural flights

Akasa, the newest kid on the aviation block in India, has opened reservations for its flights. The airline received its Air Operating Certificate (AOC) on July 7, after carrying out five successful proving flights over two days. The last two major airlines to get AOCs were Vistara, which got its certificate 11 days after its first proving flight, and AirAsia India, which got the AOC five days after its first proving flight. Akasa, on the other hand, got the AOC three days after the first proving flight. ALSO READ: Akasa Air opens flight bookings. This will be followed by 28 weekly flights from Bengaluru to Kochi from August 13. Both sectors are fiercely competitive but short. Ready… Steady… Akasa! Review: Akasa Air A++ Cabin (flying between Mumbai and Delhi)

Akasa Air, the new Indian airline founded by ex-Jet Airways management members, Booking Process I tried booking the ticket via Akasa’s website first. However, it kept going into a timeout loop or something. So, I eventually booked the ticket via an online travel agent. After booking the ticket, I pulled up my PNR on the Akasa app. I knew that Akasa was Check-in Experience Apart from giving Akasa a go, one of my other reasons to book this flight was to escape the chaos at the bigger Terminal 2 (if it existed). Akasa operates from Terminal 1 in Mumbai, which is closer to me. Since I’d not flown out of Terminal 1 for a longest time, I also wanted to check it out otherwise. So, I arrived at 11:00 am for a 1:25 pm departure from the terminal. It was a quick entry into the terminal with hardly any crowd at gate 2. Akasa has taken the rightmost bank of counters, which is closest to the Terminal 1C stairs. I was not flying with any check-in bags, but I wanted to get a hard copy of the boarding pass, so I decided to join the queue. Akasa’s ground handling is done by the Bird across the country (or at least Mumbai, Delhi, and Ahmedabad, where I’ve seen them so far). People were managing the (solitary) queue, ensuring you’d be directed to the next available check-in counter. In about 3 minutes, I was in the front of the line and at a counter. I noticed that the Priority counter was also being used as a generic check-in counter, making me wonder what would be the point of paying for t...
