The 15 Best Movies of 2022—and Where to Watch Them

While 2021 was largely defined by its proximity to the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, when worldwide lockdowns and cinema closings forced moviegoers to establish new viewing habits, 2022 seemed to be about getting back to “business as usual.” Which, itself, is a constantly evolving concept. But the past 12 months have provided all the benchmarks people have come to expect from any single year of moviedom: massive blockbusters (hello, Maverick), surprising flops (sorry, Lightyear), unexpected hits ( Sonic the Hedgehog 2?!), and a parade of superheroes. It all added up to a really solid year of entertainment, with fantastic films being made in countless genres ( Every so often a movie comes along where it feels like the cast and crew are having as much fun making the film as you are watching it. That would be Glass Onion. More specifically: Daniel Craig seems to be soaking up every second of the Detective Benoit Blanc Experience (which could have something to do with having had one hand attached to James Bond’s martini glass for the past 15 years). Rian Johnson is back in the director’s chair with a script he wrote for the second installment of this surprise franchise. The action has moved to Greece, on a private island belonging to brash tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton, who seems equally game to play). A “Murder Mystery” is on the official itinerary, but it is interrupted by the one unfolding in real life. Yet again, everyone’s a suspect. Yet again, it’s up to B...

Enter email address It’s not been your standard, regular, common-or-garden year at the movies so far. The slate of big new movies remains a little (okay, a lot ) skinnier than usual and release dates have continued to shift, with more than one big release decamping to the safer surrounds of 2023. But even the lingering impact of Covid hasn’t stopped it being an often crowd-pleasing, occasionally electrifyingyear. From awards picks like Parallel Mothers and Licorice Pizza, to virtuoso indie gems like British chef thriller and to popcorn perfection like and , there’s been much to celebrate. Here’s our best of the best of the year. RECOMMENDED: 🔥 The best films of 2023 (so far) 📺 😬 The best thriller films of all-time 🤣 The best funny films of all-time 🌏 The best foreign films of all-time Awkwardly, no Pixar film had been solo directed by a female filmmaker until Chinese-Canadian filmmaker Domee Shi came along with this cute-as-buttons creature feature about a 13-year-old girl who turns into a red panda when big emotions come knocking. It’s based on her own childhood – okay, not the panda part – and comes freighted with the authentic growing pains of adolescence. The only pity is that it we...

And that's a shame, because in addition to a handful of truly worthy smash-hit spectacles, 2022 had no shortage of terrific low-to-mid-budget films that deserve more widespread attention. Despite what you might have heard from the grumpier cinephiles among us, studios and independent creators are still making a variety of films for every taste, from intimate dramas to zany comedies to the rare treat that can bridge the gap between the two. It was a year of multiple masterpieces both from Hollywood and from abroad, from exciting new voices and some of the most celebrated directors in the business. Whatever tomorrow holds for movie theaters as an institution or streaming as a business model, 2022 removed any doubt that the artform of cinema still has a bright future. "Athena" is a thriller, a family drama, and a snapshot of contemporary tensions between citizens and institutions. It's all told from the perspective of three grieving brothers trying to make sense of their fourth brother's death. If the opening sequence doesn't grab you, you may not have a pulse: In a continuous 10 minute shot, a press conference regarding the police murder of this lost brother collapses into a frenetic raid of the station by well-organized protestors, who proceed to fortify an apartment complex into a revolutionary stronghold. It only gets more intense from there. Years after the release of his acclaimed debut feature "In Bruges," writer-director Martin McDonagh reunites stars Colin Farrell an...

Well, we’re now closing in on the end of 2022, which means that the year in movies is coming to a close. Since the prehistoric days of January, we’ve been compiling and periodically adding to our list of the best films of the year, In this final installment, we’ve added new titles that we here at Esquire believe are not only worth checking out, but will also still hang around in the pop-culture conversation well into 2023—and certainly after year-end Top 10 lists are trotted out. As you’ll see, our countdown includes a TÁR follows conductor Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) as she is accused of offering her assistants quid pro quo sexual favors in exchange for promotions in the industry—whether the allegation is true or not. She is viewed as a visionary in the music industry, and her downfall is the first film of the last few years to truly explore the journey of a celebrity getting canceled in real time. Blanchett's performance as Lydia Tár is a tour de force, with Oscar consideration just about guaranteed. You might even say that TÁR is a TÁRiffic film. Sorry. —Josh Rosenberg In The Eternal Daughter, Tilda Swinton stars in a dual role as an aging mother and her daughter, who are both returning to a gothic mansion that holds many family memories. Half ghost story and half meditative drama, The Eternal Daughter is clearly a very personal work for director Joanna Hogg. You truly feel the film's depth in its devastating final moments. Swinton also gives so much life to both of her ...
