Biju Patnaik, a name etched in every heart of Odia people, was a visionary leader. He was known as the ‘Tall Leader’, ‘Iron Man of Odisha’ and ‘Kalinga Putra’. Naveen Patnaik Biography Naveen Patnaik, the writer who turned into a politician was born on 16 October 1946 in Cuttack. He is the founder of the Biju Janata Dal. He is the son of Biju Patnaik, former Chief Minister of Odisha. He completed his education from Welham Boys' School in Dehradun, and later, The Doon School. Patnaik completed his graduation from Kirori Mal College, Delhi University and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree. After his father's demise, Patnaik decided to enter politics in 1997. In 1998, he founded the Biju Janata Dal and named after Biju Patnaik. He was elected as the Odisha Chief Minister for the first time in March 2000 and then in 2004, 2009 and 2014. He's held the position for four consecutive terms. The Biju Janata Dal secured 112 seats in the 147-member Odisha Assembly held along with Lok Sabha polls. He was sworn in as Odisha’s chief minister for the fifth consecutive term on May 29th 2019. The Odisha government has launched as many as 11 welfare schemes named after Late Biju Patnaik, father Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, during the past decade-and-a-half. Usha Devi, State Planning and Coordination Minister, in response to query, informed the Assembly on Wednesday that the schemes ranged from housing sector to electricity and transport to building of bridges. While Biju Krushak Vikash Yojna, the first scheme bearing the name ‘Biju’, was launched for farmers’ welfare in 2001, frequency of launching schemes in name of former Chief Minister had gone up in past few years. Some of the schemes carrying ‘Biju’ name were launched in parallel to the Centrally-funded schemes. Biju Gram Jyoti Yojna was launched in 2007 to cover all villages and habitations having population less than 100 following the decision of the Union government not to include villages under Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojna. Biju KBK Yojna was launched in 2006-7 to supplement efforts under centrally-funded Revised Long Term Action Programme in accelerating the pace of development of KBK region, which is recognised as one of the most backward regions in the country.
