Led by Sam Story (aka Timpoochee Kinnard), the tribe’s days revolved around fishing, hunting, and learning different ways to properly live off the land. When European settlers arrived, they taught the newcomers the same before being driven out to discover new land. In the 1890s, a man by the name of William Henry Wesley purchased the land for his family and his wife Katie Strickland. A few years later, they built what would later become known as the...

Eden Gardens State Park

The focal point of this park is a beautifully renovated two-story house with elegant white columns and wrap-around porch. In a setting of moss-draped live oaks, the 1897 mansion recalls a prosperous era before the virgin forests of longleaf pine and cypress were exhausted in this part of the state. In 1963, Lois Maxon bought and renovated the home, creating a showplace for her family heirlooms and antiques. Visitors can enjoy a guided tour of the Wesley House, meander through the gardens, enjoy a picnic and fish off the dock in Tucker Bayou.

Gardens at Eden

Beautiful blooming ornamental gardens are the main attraction for many of the winter and spring months at Camellias and azaleas are the showstoppers in this ornamental display, with over 250 camellias throughout the park and our very own cultivar, camellia japonica “Virgie’s Eden,” registered with the American Camellia Society in 2014. The ornamental gardens were originally drawn up by Greene-Hill Planners for the park’s benefactress, Lois Maxon. While camellias have been known in East Asia for centuries, the first species to enter the United States were imported camellia japonica plants from England in the late 1790s. In America, camellia interest waned after the Civil War but took on new life after the turn of the century with the popularity of camellia shows in the 1930s and formation of the American Camellia Society in 1945. Mid-season flowering varieties that bloom from the first of January until the end of February tend to be best suited to our region’s warmer conditions. Camellias perform best in partially shaded locations enhanced by good water drainage and air movement. Many varieties of camellias will withstand temperatures lower than freezing for a short period of time without plant damage, but open flowers would need protection by other trees, etc. Flower buds that have not yet opened can withstand temperatures well below freezing without damage and open once temperatures have risen again. Another interesting fact about camellias concerns their propagation thro...

Historic Wesley House

The Wesley House itself has been lovingly preserved, maintaining the original yellow heart pine siding, floors and interior molding, as well as 95% of its original glass pocket windows. When Lois Maxon purchased the home in 1963 along with 10.5 acres for $12,500, she stated that she had “found her Eden” and proceeded to devote a million dollars to an extensive renovation of the home. The Wesley house, which had been built in the Victorian style, received a more antebellum update, with renovations continuing for most of the five years she owned the home. She donated the property to the Florida Park Service on Christmas Eve 1968. House Tours • The Wesley House is open for tours Thursday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. hourly. Consider taking a tour of the historic Wesley House and find yourself immersed in the history of a bygone era.

Eden Gardens State Park, for the Ages

By Brooke Morton Most people don’t buy a home and then immediately invest $1 million toward rebuilding it to look 50 years older. Lois Maxon did precisely this back in 1963 — but she had good reason. She wanted a living space that fit her sleek Louis XVI furniture: the Victorian property ornate with a cupola and gingerbread wainscoting was revamped into an antebellum showcase with cleaner lines. Her Louis XVI collection the second-largest in the United States is one of the biggest draws of what is now Eden Gardens State Park in Maxon a publishing magnate grew inspired to acquire tapestries gilded statues a marble French clock a petticoat table and all manner of items to fill a home. Even those who don’t walk in with an appreciation for antiques will be wowed by the amount of handcrafted detail — no two pieces are alike. Family portraits hang throughout the home including one of Maxon’s grandfather that hangs in the library. The patriarch encouraged her furniture fixation by gifting family heirlooms. (Back in Germany the Maxons a family of aristocrats thrived in the antiques business.) The home itself originally belonged to lumberman William Henry Wesley. During his time served in the Civil War he happened upon a plantation whose owners gave him food and shelter. This kindness stuck with him: That home inspired what Wesley built in 1895. The yellow heart-pine lumber for the property came from Wesley’s sawmill located a short walk away on Tucker Bayou. Visitors who wander on...
