The protests were to culminate in a march to Islamabad which threatened to worsen political turmoil in the nuclear-armed country, which is also battling an economic crisis. “I have decided not to go to Islamabad because I know there will be havoc and the loss will be to the country,” Khan told a gathering of thousands of supporters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, near the capital, Islamabad. Khan attracts cultish devotion from supporters but on Saturday made his speech hundreds of metres from the bulk of the crowd of around 25,000 to 30,000, separated by coils of barbed wire and a buffer of police officers. Imran Khan’s Party Defectors Announce New Political Group

Imran Khan’s former allies announced the formation of a new political party, the latest setback for the embattled former premier as he clashes with Pakistan’s powerful army and the government. Jahangir Khan Tareen, one of Khan’s closest aides, will lead the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party, he announced at a news conference on Thursday. More than a dozen top leaders of Khan’s party joined the new group.

Lahore: Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan claimed on Monday that the country's powerful military establishment has planned to keep him in jail for the next 10 years under sedition charges. In a series of tweets in the early hours of Monday, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chief said: "So now the complete London plan is out. Using pretext of violence while I was inside the jail, they have assumed the role of judge, jury and executioner. The plan now is to humiliate me by putting Bushra begum (Khan's wife) in jail, and using some sedition law to keep me inside for next ten years."
