Messi vs. Ronaldo at World Cup: Goals, stats, records hint at who is the best player on world stage

Lionel Messi finally has a clear advantage over his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo, after winning the World Cup in 2022. Barcelona legend and current Paris Saint-Germain and Argentina talisman Messi is 35, while evergreen Ronaldo was until recently starring for Manchester United in the Premier League and is still featuring for Portugal on the world stage at the age of 37. The 2022 World Cup is likely to be the final time we see the two superstar strikers on the biggest stage of all, and Messi has finally repeated the feat of the likes of Pele and Diego Maradona by lifting the famous World Cup trophy. Messi and Ronaldo both made their World Cup debuts in 2006, let's see how they've gotten on over the years. Messi's career at the World Cup Prior to finally winning the title in 2022 after a penalty shootout victory over France, Messi had previously gone closest to winning the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014, when Argentina were beaten in the final by Germany after he had scored four goals in seven games in the tournament. The 2010 World Cup in South Africa was particularly frustrating for Messi: he failed to score a single goal as Argentina were knocked out in the quarterfinals, and he managed a solitary strike at the 2006 and 2018 editions. Barca's all-time top scorer is known for performing on the big stage — he is routinely prolific in the Champions League — but had never scored in a match after the Round of 16 stage at the World Cup. That was until the 2022 tournament...

Messi Scores 80

Lionel Messi needed just eighty seconds to score a wondergoal for Argentina against Australia. Getty Images Lionel Messi wowed football fans in China and the rest of the world on Thursday by needing a mere 79 seconds to score a wondergoal which was the fastest of his career for Argentina against Australia. Messi needed far less time to make his mark against the men from Down Under on this occasion. With just 79 seconds down on the clock, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez won the ball in midfield as Mathew Leckie slipped then charged forward. Fernandez laid the ball off to his captain, who then used his trademark cut inside on his left foot. Dummying an opponent, Messi let off a textbook finish in the bottom corner that goalkeeper Maty Ryan had no chance with as the South Americans went 1-0 up. Messi was mobbed near the corner flag by his teammates, as thousands of fans roared around the stadium in the Chinese capital. Given recent remarks, Thursday's friendly could be one of the last chances fans in the Asian country have to see the Inter Miami-bound idol up close - at least in an Argentina shirt. Earlier this week, Titan Sports, Messi announced that he is ADVERTISEMENT "This was my last World Cup. I will see how things go, but in principle no, I will not go to the next World Cup," he explained. By then presumably well-settled in the MLS, Messi is expected to help Argentina defend their Copa America crown on American soil next summer but it is unclear whether he will conti...

Lionel Messi’s World Cup final goal against France sets new tournament record

Lionel Messi’s opening goal from the penalty spot against France has made World Cup history. The 35-year-old has become the first player in history to score in the group stages, round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final in the same edition of a World Cup. Messi is playing in his fifth World Cup and is attempting to win the tournament for the first time, after he lost the 2014 final 1-0 to Germany. The goal which came in the 23rd minute is Messi’s sixth at Qatar 2022 and opened the scoring against France. Messi went on to score a second as well as netting in the subsequent penalty shootout, as Argentina defeated Messi is not the first player to score in every round of the tournament, however. The Brazilian great Jairzinho scored in every round of the 1970 World Cup — although only 16 nations competed at the tournament which meant there was no round of 16. Alcides Ghiggia of Uruguay also scored in every round of the 1950 World Cup. But back then there were only 13 teams with the tournament consisting of two group stages. In total Messi has scored 13 goals in 26 matches at the World Cup. His previous record at a tournament was four goals, which he accomplished during Argentina’s run to the final of the 2014 tournament in Brazil. But he has hit new heights in Qatar. He scored twice in the group stage — against Saudi Arabia and Mexico — before scoring in the round of 16 against Australia, the quarter-final against the Netherlands, the semi-final against Croatia and now t...
