What Are the Symptoms of Mpox (Monkeypox)?

• Mpox is a rare disease that is related to smallpox. • The disease usually causes flu-like symptoms and swelling of lymph nodes. Rashes, pustules, ulcers, and other lesions tend to appear a few days later. • Researchers are still trying to understand precisely how the disease is transmitted, and how symptoms appear in different people. Unusual cases of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) are cropping up around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) has documented more than 550 cases in 30 nations, including those where the disease does not usually appear. According to the CDC, mpox begins with: • Fever • Headache • Muscle aches • Backache • Swollen lymph nodes • Chills • Exhaustion After one to three days, the patient develops a rash, often beginning on the face and then spreading to other parts of the body. Mpox typically begins with flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache, muscle aches, and exhaustion. Different from smallpox, a key feature of mpox is that it also causes the lymph nodes to swell, according to the CDC. The lesions will progress through four stages—from flat spots to raised bumps to blisters and lesions filled with pus. The lesions will usually be the same size and stage of development on any given part of the body. As the body heals from the disease, the lesions will turn into scabs and eventually fall off. A doctortold NPRthat some mpox patients have rashes that look much more like a crater or ulcer than the raised, pus-filled lesions that a...

Mpox (formerly Monkeypox)

Mpox is a potentially serious viral illness. It can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person’s body fluids or Mpox rashes or lesions. Mpox is part of the same family of viruses as the variola virus, the virus that causes smallpox. Mpox symptoms are similar to smallpox symptoms but milder, and Mpox is rarely fatal. The current level of Mpox in the U.S. is higher than normal, but the risk to the general population is low. Most people affected in the current outbreak have generally reported having close physical contact for a sustained time with someone who has Mpox . How is Mpox spread? Mpox can be spread from person to person through close, personal contact (often skin-to-skin contact), including: • Direct contact with Mpox lesions, sores, rashes, or scabs. • Contact with objects, surfaces, and fabrics (such as clothing, bedding, or towels) that have been used by someone with Mpox . • Through oral fluids or respiratory droplets from a person with Mpox during prolonged face-to-face contact. • This contact can happen during intimate sexual contact, including: • Anal, oral, and vaginal sex or touching the genitals and/or anus of a person with Mpox . • Hugging, kissing, massaging, and talking closely. • Touching fabrics and objects during sex that were used by a person with Mpox (this includes bedding, sex toys, and towels). People can also get Mpox from an infected animal through a bite or direct contact with the infected animal’s blood, body fluids, or so...

Monkeypox

Monkeypox is an infection caused by a virus similar to the now-eradicated smallpox virus. It has been most common in some African countries, but outbreaks have occurred in other areas from time to time. In 2022, the World Health Organization declared a global health emergency since monkeypox had spread to many countries through social interactions and intimate contacts. • Monkeypox is spread by close contact and exposure to an infected person's respiratory droplets, skin lesions or bodily fluids. • Monkeypox symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, fever, and a rash that may initially be mistaken for chickenpox or a sexually transmitted disease if in the genital or anal region. • While monkeypox cases spreading globally in 2022 can cause severe disease, the infection most often clears up on its own. Monkeypox may be most severe in young children, especially if they have poor nutritional status. In previous years fatal cases have occurred, primarily among children in Africa. • Vaccines can prevent monkeypox. They are currently in short supply and being used to prevent monkeypox disease in people who have been exposed to the virus. When it becomes more widely available, the vaccine may be appropriate to protect at-risk populations, such as men who have sex with men, bisexual people, commercial sex workers and others who engage in behaviors that put them at higher risk for encountering the virus that causes monkeypox. • The infection continues to spread, but because transmission...

Monkeypox is a virus that originated in animals in West and Central Africa. While usually confined to animals, as previous outbreaks have shown, it can also jump to humans. “This is a virus that belongs to the same group as the smallpox virus; however, it’s a much milder and less deadly form of it,” says The first confirmed case was on New symptoms in this monkeypox outbreak In a recently published study in The BMJ, scientists discovered differences between this monkeypox outbreak and previous outbreaks after investigating 197 people who contracted the virus. In previous outbreaks, patients would see the rash, or pox, throughout the body in a widespread fashion. However, this outbreak is unique as some of the most common symptoms include rectal pain or penile edema. There have also been cases where there has been a ...
