Sissu Valley

Sissu valley is located a few miles ahead, on the other side of the Atal Tunnel . This area falls in Lahaul District of Himachal ,managed by the Border Roads Organisation . The journey from Atal Tunnel to Sissu Valley itself is breathtaking, with fresh mountain air, Chandrabhaga ( Chenab) river flowing on one side amidst snow covered mountains and valleys ...so far it seems unspoilt by tourism . In March 2023 , we were welcomed by a fresh blanket of snow!! It was powdery and flaky, our feet were sinking ,snow boots are advisable...there are ziplines for the adventure seekers . There was just 1 food stall which was open ,we had piping hot Maggi and chai (tea) . They were serving omelette too . Govt run Atal Cafe was closed . Tourists are allowed till about 4 pm, so one can plan the trip accordingly . One may get stuck in traffic jam too . Awesome place.. went in March end and still found quite a lot of snow... We found the place a little crowded so a few of us crossed the bridge and went to the other side to find pristine clean snow... Wonderful experience, with at least 3-4 feet of snow just next to the Chenab! Make sure to rent the snow outfit on the way(Around Rs 250 including gumboots) else your clothing will get wet! Lots of shops on the way, so don't worry... Its a Awesome place to visit. The only thing is u shlould use 4x4 local car from local people. 4500 to 7000 max they demand for the trip Its negotiate. 100% must viait if u r in manali. Very good view of live ice...

To the Sissu Lake

Sissu lake, a man-made water body, is located near the foothills of the Lahaul mountains. If you take the downhill road from the Sissu village, you can spot its serene blue waters after a couple of hundred meters. Across the lake, you can also spot the Palden Lhamo Dhar waterfall which looks extraordinary with changing winds and the location of sun in the sky. Across the Attal Tunnel To reach Sissu, I took a taxi from Manali. This was early March. Compared to Delhi, which was beginning to look like a frying pan, Manali had an overcast sky and pleasant weather. But nothing had prepared me for the weather and view after the Atal tunnel. It takes about 45 minutes to cross the same. Once you’re through, snow-clad mountains stand tall in all directions. Tundra winds surround the barren peaks and temperatures (in early March) are no higher than 7°C. Way to the Lake As soon as I settled inside a local hotel, I felt a strong urge to visit the lake. Near the banks of the Chandra river, the lake sat like a giant mirror. I took my copy of Robert Twigger’s White Mountain and walked along the curving roads of Sissu village. There are two ways to reach the lake. If you’re travelling by car and want to make a short stop near the lake, you will find a narrow route to your left that will take you to the riverside region. But if you’re someone like me, you can also try the stairway route. Near ZostelSissu and behind local houses, you’ll find an old staircase (although not well-maintained) t...
