Plastics: From Pollution to Solutions

Unit Unit Plastics: From Pollution to Solutions Plastics: From Pollution to Solutions Since the post-WWII industrial boom, our reliance on plastics--thanks in part to practical and innovative uses in healthcare and food security--now generates an estimated truckload worth of plastic in the oceans every minute. In what other ways did we arrive at this crisis, and how can we reverse it? In this unit, students learn about plastic pollution and become advocates for solutions. Marine plastic pollution is one of the major ecological crises of the 21st century. Over five trillion pieces of plastic are estimated to float in the ocean, and that number increases every day. Plastics affect over 600 species of marine wildlife, including species that humans eat. In the first half of this unit, students learn about this crisis and its ecosystem impacts. They witness wildlife affected by plastics, and conduct a classroom plastics audit. In teams, students create an Ocean Plastics Movement Model and Food Web Infographic, which form part of their final project, a National Geographic-style magazine to help readers take action against plastics. In the second half of the unit, students learn about the growing global anti-plastics movement, and advocate for solutions of their own. They compare ideas proposed by activists and engineers and pick their favorite solutions. Finally, they choose a target audience for their magazine and propose a concrete action plan for their audience to combat plas...

Reduce Plastic Pollution: What Can We Do Today?

Introduction The current global problem of climate change is affecting human life in different ways. For instance, the extreme weather patterns recorded in different parts of the world within the past six decades have resulted in underproduction, heavy downpours, and global warming. The sustainability question is more relevant today than at any other time if people are to continue pursuing their personal and professional goals. Unfortunately, some corporations, emerging businesses, and citizens still do not appreciate the importance of protecting the integrity of the natural environment for the purpose of posterity. This paper gives a detailed analysis of plastic pollution and proposals that different stakeholders and governments can implement to mitigate this predicament since it is one of the leading contributors to climate change. Learn more Background Information Pollution is a major concern today due to the forces of industrialization, globalization, urbanization, and consumption. Many companies produce a wide range of materials that they utilize for packaging various consumer goods or items depending on the expectations of the final consumer. Plastic remains the favorite choice since it is durable, rigid, easy to handle, and capable of withstanding increased heat conditions (Ritchie and Roser). Corporations and emerging firms find it useful due to its availability and malleability. Unfortunately, plastic pollution is presently one of the leading causes of environment...

Plastic pollution solutions: emerging technologies to prevent and collect marine plastic pollution

• • Technology can be used to target hotspots of marine plastic pollution. • • The Inventory is a tool to identify plastic pollution prevention and cleanup technologies. • • Fifty-two inventions focus on preventing plastic leakage or collecting marine plastics. • • Technology alone cannot solve the plastics pollution issue. • • The Inventory underscores the importance of cross-sector collaborations. As plastic waste accumulates in the ocean at alarming rates, the need for efficient and sustainable remediation solutions is urgent. One solution is the development and mobilization of technologies that either 1)prevent plastics from entering waterways or2) collect marine and riverineplastic pollution. To date, however, few reports have focused on these technologies, and information on various technological developments is scattered. This leaves policymakers, innovators, and researchers without a central, comprehensive, and reliable source of information on the status of available technology to target this global problem. The goal of this study was to address this gap by creating a comprehensive inventory of technologies currently used or in development to prevent the leakage of plastic pollution or collect existing plastic pollution. Our Plastic Pollution Prevention and Collection Technology Inventory ( https://nicholasinstitute.duke.edu/plastics-technology-inventory) can be used as a roadmap for researchers and governments to 1) facilitate comparisons between the scope of sol...
