TVS Ronin review, design, price, engine performance, features

It's always interesting to see the results when a company tries something completely different from what it normally excels at. TVS does a fine job making sporty motorcycles, scooters, commuters and mopeds, but this is their first attempt at a relaxed, leisure riding, modern-retro sort of motorcycle. Called the Ronin – the Japanese word for a samurai without a master, and that probably makes sense – this motorcycle doesn't seem to fit into any known category of bikes. TVS Ronin: design The Ronin draws its heritage back to the Zeppelin cruiser concept that was shown at the Auto Expo four years ago, but this bike has clearly taken a rather different direction when it comes to the design philosophy. You'll see various sorts of motorcycles from different angles. There are hints of neo-retro machines, cafe racers, flat trackers and scramblers in there, but the strongest design theme seems to be that of a cruiser. The most obvious cruiser cue is visible in the raked-out angle of the front USD fork, but TVS has thrown in a few more details. The chain drive, for example, gets an oversized cover that is designed to look like the belt drive system on a large cruiser. And then there's the tall, swept-back handlebar, along with an alloy wheel design that looks inspired by what you'll see on some big Harleys. The overall result is a motorcycle that has a good presence up front, thanks to the USD fork and chunky 14-litre fuel tank, although the rear section is definitely more polarising...

TVS Ronin: First Ride Review

Avg. Ex-showroom price ₹ 1,49,001 The Ronin comes in three variants, and all the above-mentioned details hold particularly true for the top-end version which gets a dual-tone colour scheme and golden forks. Although the middle variant also gets the latter, it looks more subtle with a single-tone paint scheme. The base trim, on the other hand, has the most understated looks with a single-tone colour sans the golden forks. In terms of the overall build quality and fit and finish, the Ronin scores high and doesn’t leave room for complaints. The paint finish looks upmarket, the plastic panels feel sturdy, the switches are tactile to operate, and there are no uneven panel gaps to be found. Powering the Ronin is a 225.9cc, single-cylinder, four-valve, oil-cooled engine that churns out 20bhp and 19.93Nm of peak torque. Now, this engine is a derivative of the Apache 200’s mill with a few internal changes, like a longer stroke and different tuning. The performance numbers are not extraordinary but they tell you just half of the story. Mind you, all the torque comes in as early as 3,750rpm, translating into a strong low and mid-range pull, thereby delivering better tractability. Meanwhile, the transmission duties are handled by a five-speed gearbox. Before I got going on the bike, I admired the view from the saddle; a wide handlebar, a high and offset console, and a bulbous fuel tank. And typical of neo-retro offerings, the overall ergonomics are comfortable and neutral accompanied ...
