Today is Vat Savitri Purnima Vrat. It is a very auspicious day for the Hindus especially married Hindu women. On this day married women observe a fast for the long and healthy life of their husbands and also for filling their lives with happiness. The first is kept on Jyestha Amavasya and the second on Jyeshtha Purnima. This time Vat Purnima fast will be observed on the second Jyestha Amavasya day i.e. June 3. Vat Purnima Vrat holds immense significance in Hindu culture, primarily for married women. The festival is rooted in the legend of Savitri, a devoted wife who fought with the Lord of Death, Yama, to bring her husband back to life. It symbolises the strength, dedication, and selflessness of a woman toward her husband. Observing Vat Purnima Vrat is believed to bring happiness, prosperity, and longevity to married life. It is considered an opportunity for women to express love, care, and gratitude towards their husbands. The Vat Vriksha, which represents Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva, is worshipped as a sacred symbol of the divine union between a husband and wife.

In northern India, Vat Savitri Vrat is observed during Jyeshtha Amavasya whereas in rest of the states, Vat Savitri Vrat, which is also called as Vat Purnima Vrat, is observed during Jyeshtha Purnima. Hence married women in Maharashtra, Gujarat and southern Indian states observe Vat Savitri Vrat 15 days later than that of North Indian women. However the legend behind observing the fast is same in both calendars. As per vat Savitri Vrat legend, the great Savitri tricked Lord Yama, the lord of death, and compelled Him to return the life of her husband Satyawan.
